The Healing and Metaphysical Properties of Jet

Jet is a very hard form of natural carbon – close, in mineral composition, to coal. It is, in fact, fossilised wood from the ‘monkey-puzzle tree’. It is used for protection and is known as the ‘stone of the witches’. Worn around the neck, usually with Amber, it protects from the entities of darkness, against illness and violence. There is a lot of superstition surrounding this mineral and it is said that those attracted to it are ‘old souls’. During circle work, it is believed that wearing Jet guards the physical body allowing safe spiritual travelling. Believed to dispel fears, break bonds and negative thought patterns, protect the wearer and associated with the Mother Earth.

Whitby Jet is a natural organic gemstone formed from ancient wood that became buried in sediment and transformed over millions of years. Found in Jurassic rocks of the North Yorkshire coast, around Whitby, it dates back approximately 180 million years. Unlike crystal gemstones Jet comes from plant material rather than mineral crystals. Whitby Jet is known for its deep black colour and ability to take a smooth, highly polished finish. Its naturally lightweight and often feels warm to the touch making it particularly comfortable to wear.
